ブログの何が彼らを高めたのだろうか。最も重要なのは「外化」である。自らの考えやアイデアを、発話、メモ、文章、ジェスチャーなどの方法で外に 出してみることを、認知科学では外化と呼んでいる。ブログによる外化は、言語というメディアを通すこと、他者を想定することなどが含まれ、これらが学習の 向上に役立つことは多くの人の指摘するとおりである。

また、「書いたものは後に残る」という点も重要だ。実はたいていの場合、 記事を最もよく読むのは、それを書いた本人なのである。ブログを用いた実験的授業を行って、学生がアクセスしたページを分析すると、自らのページを見るこ とが大変に多いことがわかった。特に最終的な課題の提出前には、その割合は著しく増え、数日で数十回も自分が以前に書いたページを読み直している。たくさ ん書くようになると、以前に書いたことを忘れてしまうこともよくある。だから、過去の記事を読み返すと、意外にいいアイデアが転がっていることも多いので ある。

もう1つ大事なのは、人は進歩するということだ。始めの頃にいいことを書いても、その価値に気づけないことは多い。しか し自らが成長するにしたがって、評価眼、鑑識眼も洗練されてくる。すると以前は何とも思わなかった自らの記事が、急に光り輝いてくるということもよくあ る。「オレって意外にいいこと言ってたんだ」というのは、ブログのヘビーユーザーがよく口にする言葉なのである。
