Twitterが今日これほどもてはやされていることを考えると、もし「成功のために重要なのはビジョンか作り込みか？」というアンケートをしたら、ほとんどの回答者がビジョンと答えるような気がする。しかしLevchinがその話をしたときにはっきりと認識していたように、実はビジョン派はシリコンバレーではひどい目に遭う可能性の方が高い。

音楽産業を根本的に変えたのはNapsterだった。しかしそれによって儲けたのはiTunesだ。Googleはドットコム・バブル破裂期に検索エンジンを構築しようとした多数の会社の最後の1社だった。そのため創立期には多くのベンチャーキャピタルからけんもほろろの扱いを受けるという苦労をした。Blackberryではなく、本当はPalmがスマートフォンのパイオニアだ。同様にソーシャル・ネットワークのパイオニアはFriendsterだ。Friendsterが創立された頃、FacebookのMark Zuckerbergは大学に入ってさえいなかった。

それじゃAppleはどうか？　なるほどコンピュータ・メーカーとしてはビジョン派といえるだろう。しかしAppleが企業として成功を収めたのはiPodとiPhoneの成功による―どちらも本質的にはよくできたMP3プレイヤー、よくできたスマートフォンだ。この傾向はエンタープライズ向けソフトウェアの分野でも同様だ。i2、PeopleSoft、Siebelなどが開発した革命的なソフトウェアは市場に君臨することに成功しただろうか？　残念ながらそうはなっていない。エンタープライズ・ソフトのトップ企業はSAPだ。この会社のテクノロジーは平凡だが、アプリケーションは優秀だ。それに反して、たとえば、Siebelを買収したOracleは技術は優秀だが、アプリケーションの質はさっぱりだ。
